CHAMP Helps Long-Time Patients Transition from the State Psychiatric Hospital

In October of 2000, Community Hope and our partner agency, Comprehensive Behavioral Healthcare, established a pilot program specifically for individuals who have become “institutionalized” after years of hospitalization. One-third of the initial residents of the program known as, CHAMP (Care and Hope At Morris Plains), were hospitalized at Greystone Park Psychiatric Hospital for more than twenty (20) years. Today, individuals once reluctant to leave the institution have made incredible progress.

Then-Acting Governor and current Senate President Richard Codey (left) tours the CHAMP Program with CH Board President Carmela Lunt and Executive Director J. Michael Armstrong in August 2005.
The 10-bed CHAMP Program has since expanded to a 25-bed facility, specializing in serving former Greystone patients who are reluctant to leave the hospital even when they have progressed beyond the need for care at that level.

Formerly located on the Greystone Park Psychiatric Hospital campus, the CHAMP Program we privately operate with our partner agency includes:

  • A day treatment program with specialized services, including MICA recovery services for individuals with co-occurring mental illness and substance abuse disorders.

  • Five residences providing a homelike environment and 24-hour staffing for twenty-five former Greystone patients.

The Partnership Program Opens at Greystone in Summer 2007

Further expansions on the Greystone campus are underway as we strive to help other long-term patients who no longer require hospitalization.

Community Hope and CBH Care are developing a second program on the grounds of Greystone Park Psychiatric Hospital, renovating “the cottages” to create a specialized 36-bed recovery program. Similar to CHAMP, the self-contained program will serve individuals who have experienced long-term hospitalization. The Partnership program will provide specialized services to individuals with medical conditions and those with co-occurring mental illness and substance abuse disorders.

Renovations on the Greystone cottages have commenced and the Partnership Program is slated to open as early as Summer 2007. Community Hope has already begun recruiting and training support service staff who will be providing 24-hour direct care at the new program. Our counselors will focus on helping long-institutionalized patients transition to more community-based programs.
